Early Years

Our Early Years and Foundation Stage here at St Teresa's is made up of our Nursery and Reception Class.

At St Teresa's, our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides a nurturing, inspiring, and faith-filled environment where every child is cherished as a unique child of God. We recognise that these formative years lay the foundations for a lifetime of learning, faith, and personal growth.

Our EYFS curriculum is built upon the statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (DfE, 2021), enriched with our Catholic values and Gospel virtues. We aim to foster each child’s spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development alongside their academic and physical growth.

Our Vision in EYFS

We strive to create a warm, inclusive atmosphere where children feel safe, happy, and confident to explore the world God has given them. Through play, exploration, and guided teaching, we encourage curiosity, resilience, kindness, and a love of learning.

We place Christ at the centre of everything we do. Daily prayer, Celebration of the Word, and participation in the liturgical life of the Church help our youngest pupils grow in their relationship with God and live out the values of respect, forgiveness, and compassion.

Our Curriculum

The EYFS curriculum covers the seven areas of learning:

Prime Areas

  • Communication and Language – building rich vocabulary, listening skills, and confidence in speaking.

  • Physical Development – promoting coordination, movement, and healthy lifestyles.

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development – nurturing positive relationships, self-awareness, and emotional wellbeing.

Specific Areas

  • Literacy – fostering a love of stories, reading, and writing.

  • Mathematics – developing understanding of number, shape, space, and measure.

  • Understanding the World – exploring creation, communities, and the wonders of God’s world.

  • Expressive Arts and Design – encouraging creativity, imagination, and expression through a variety of media.

Learning Through Play and Purposeful Experiences

We believe children learn best through a balance of child-initiated play and adult-led activities. Our environment is carefully designed to spark curiosity, support independence, and provide opportunities for collaboration. Outdoor learning plays a key role in helping children connect with nature and appreciate God’s creation.

Partnership with Families

Parents are a child’s first and most important educators. We work closely with families, valuing their insights and involving them in their child’s learning journey through open communication, workshops, and shared celebrations of achievement.

Faith in Action

Through the teachings of Jesus and the mission of the Church, our children learn to care for others, celebrate diversity, and make a positive contribution to the community. We encourage them to put their faith into action through kindness, service, and stewardship of God’s creation.
