James and the Giant Peach dance
In our dance lessons, year 2 have choreographed group dances based on the story of "James and the Giant Peach." The dances depict James going through the tunnel, the insects he meets and floating to freedom at the end. We included dance techniques such as canon, varying levels and dynamics to make our dances interesting. I wonder if you can spot the examples of all of these in our performances below?
We have been busy in science learning all about habitats! So to celebrate the end of the topic, we made our own 'shoebox habitats'!! We each decided on a habitat that we would like to create a habitat for, and then carefully planned and designed what would be in that habitat to make it suitable for different animals! We know that all animals need 4 things to survive:
- Food
- Water
- Shelter
- Oxygen
So we ensured our habitat had these features! We used a range of manmade and natural materials in our habitats such as grass, leaves, paper, paint, tissue and sticks.

13th February - today we had an exciting visitor to year 2 for the morning: Charlotte from Essex Wildlife Trust! We had a fantastic morning learning lots of new facts and doing many activities! We started the morning with a hands-on exploring of different objects - we had to guess what the items were! There were nests, skulls from birds and even owl pellets! (which are bones and fur from an owl's stomach that they cannot digest, so sick back up!)
We then went outside and explored different habitats, looking for signs of mammals and birds in those habitats! Then we took microscopes and information books to study mini beasts a bit more closely!
Finally, we made pine cone bird feeders to take home, using a pine cone and some string, lard which we squished into the pine cone, and seeds which we stuffed all around for the birds to eat!
November/December - in Science we have been looking at different materials, and have experimented with absorbant and waterproof materials. We used pipettes filled with water to test which paper towel was the most absorbant, and which materials were waterproof. We learnt about Charles Macintosh and his invention: the raincoat!
4/12/19 We have been making advent wreaths! We talked about how we prepare for the birth of Jesus, and how the church uses an advent wreath to help count down to the birth! We created our wreaths from cut out green handprints, and rolled up card for the candles! We even cut out all of the flames and tucked them carefully into the candles, ready to 'light' each Sunday of advent! We hope you are enjoying them at home!
We have been so busy in year 2 in December! Here are some pictures of our nativity, which we have been working so hard on! Thank you parents for allowing us to practice our songs so often at home! We will miss it once it's over, but then the Christmas countdown really begins!
